Piff's What Ifs? 4- Donkey Konga 4: DK DJ

+

This is gonna be a real quick one but I had to write this down somewhere. Probably typos. Donkey Kong, Mario's gorilla rival, is my favorite Nintendo character. While the fact that I, an African-American, respond the best to a gorilla can be read in some bad ways, his platformers on the SNES, N64 and Gamecube were so good that I didn't even bother to think about racial stereotypes from Japan.

DSi Virtual Handheld- The Others

If the Virtual Console can have games from non-Nintendo platforms, why not the Virtual handheld. The Gameboy was so succesful that no one could blame you for not even touching another portable system but they did have their gems that a virtual handheld could allow you to discover. Besides, Nintendo already has relationships with these third-parties. I’m sure they would love some free money.

DSi Virtual Handheld- Pokemon, they must all be caught by you

It goes without saying that if Nintendo were to start selling you old handheld games on DSi, the massively successful Pokemon RPGs would be some of the first games on the service. The series created a whole new generation of Gameboy players and we, along with Nintendo’s bank, are still feeling the effcts of its legacy to this day.

DSi Virtual Handheld- It's for the Core

DSi Virtual Handheld: It’s for the Core

When you sell as many units as the Gameboy did third parties are bound to take advantage of it. After all, beening able to play your favorite console franchises on the go is a marketing strategy that writes itself. With no other viable handhelds to go to even the developers of more hardcore games had to jump on the Gameboy bandwagon. These same third parties would also be quick to get as many of their games as possible on the virtual handheld to actually get some money for the 100k roms sitting on their thumb drives.

DSi Virtual Handheld- Nintendo's Heavy Hitters

I’m doing this for four more days so let’s try to get some of the big Nintendo franchises out of the way shall we? And remember, wait until this series is done before complaining that your favorite Gameboy game wasn’t mentioned and that I have ruined your childhood memories. We have a lot of games to get through today so let’s get started.

DSi Virtual Handheld- The Many Forms of Mario

Special thanks to Arceus144 whose mailbag question inspired this post
For me personally, one of the most disappointing things that came out of this year’s E3 was NO announcement of a virtual console service for the DSi. But on HearMii we can dare to speculate on what the idea, bursting with potential, could have brought forth. All this week all I’ll be posting some of my picks for what I would want on this “virtual Handheld”. Are you listening Reggie. Each day will have a theme. Today’s theme is a few of the more standout Game Boy games starring Nintendo’s bizarre grown-man-yet-still-has-childlike-appeal mascot Mario.

Assie's Endless Possibilities 3: Wii Vitality Sensor

When Global President of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata announced the Wii Vitality Sensor, many people may have said “What the fuck?”, but I on the other hand said “What the if?” if that makes any sense whatsoever.

I began thinking to myself, what could this Vitality Sensor possibly be used for in a video game? Iwata referenced being able to achieve “greater relaxation”, and I then began thinking in the inverse. What if instead of measuring relaxation, certain games perform the opposite and measure your stress level?

Piff's What Ifs? 3- The Nintendo Zapper Collection

Piff’s What If’s Episode 3- The Nintendo Zapper Collection

What has been two days? Several months since I did one of these? Whatevs. Nintendo has a bad habit of releasing intriguing peripherals along with solid albeit tech-demoesque games and then proceeding to do absolutely nothing with said peripheral. Such a fate seems inevitable for the year-old Wii Zapper but that can’t stop us from wondering what might have been.

This idea was actually inspired by the Zapper’s pack-in game, Link’s Crossbow Training. With that, Nintendo took a franchise one wouldn’t associate with a gun shaped controller and turned it into fun, quirky spin-off well worth the twenty purchase along with the Zapper. Imagine now if Nintendo were to do such a thing with some more of their franchise and creating a (minigame) collection composed of them for full price. This idea definitely has some potential.

ido does: A What-if : Super Paper Crossover

Paper Mario was the first RPG I ever played. The best part was that i didn't even realize it was an RPG! I think that's part of the magic the Mario RPGs bring, they're so unique and genre bending.

Which brings me to the point of this What if..

We all loved the idea of The Subspace Emissary. It's execution, however, was less than stellar. There story was easy to comprehend, but it could have been so much more. I think it's time for a crazy crossover RPG using the Paper Mario series as a template.

Assie's Endless Possibilities 2: Pure White Giant Glastonbury

We all know that No More Heroes has a couple minigames, from playing with your cat Jeane, to the full on top-down shooter known as Pure White Giant Glastonbury, which is the awesomest minigame ever invented. Imagine how cool it would be if there was an entire full WiiWare game based on Pure White Giant Glastonbury.

It could feature a story mode for the lone wolf in all of us, and maybe some aded features we only wish could've been in No More Heroes' version. There could be a co-op mode (for both online and off), Online Leaderboards, Time Trials and Speed Runs. Additionally, you could have the chance to pick from an assortment of characters.

Assie's Endless Possibilities 1: MGS Wii

With the recent announcement of Gamecube games being ported to Wii as budget "Plays on Wii" titles, the first thing that came to mind was Metroid Prime, but about 5 seconds later I realized this could mean Metal Gear Solid Wii.

Piff's What Ifs? 2- Earthbound Wii

I’m feverishly trying to finish Megaman 9 so a review of that is coming soon. In the meantime, here’s another “Piff’s What Ifs?”

Piff’s What Ifs? 2- Earthbound Wii

(Sorry this one is a little short but RPGs are pretty established. A new Earthbound wouldn’t be as radical as something like a new Ice Climbers. The treat at the bottom should be more than enough make up for it.)

Earthbound, or Mother in Japan, is one of the few Nintendo first-party franchises I’ve yet to play. That’s because Nintendo likes to pretend that the franchise doesn’t exist. At this point fans would be happy to get the SNES original on the virtual console, then maybe the NES version as a Japanese import, and maybe if they are lucky, Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance. However, on Piff’s What If’s we dare to dream. Today, let’s dream about Earthbound for Wii.

Tim's Whims 1 - Secret of Mana Wii

Tim's Whims 1 - Secret of Mana Wii

Following Piffman 2's "Piff's what if's? 1 - Ice Climbers", I decided it would be interesting to discuss what Secret of Mana would be like on the Wii. Any crew member can submit a "What if" but if you have a good one yourself, post it in this thread http://wiitv.freeforums.org/fan-what-if-s-t519.html#8006 or e-mail hearmii@gmail.com. Please comment on this feature below, whether you like it or dislike it.

Secret of Mana
, originally a series conceived as a spin-off for Final Fantasy, saw its second incarnation as a series in its own right on the SNES. Called something confusing in Japanese, with a '2' on the end, Secret of Mana was the first iteration in the series the reach Western audiences. Despite originally being a spin-off to Final Fantasy, it should not be regarded as a clone. Featuring a very rich storyline, vibrant graphics and a real-time fighting system with up to three players, Secret of Mana is regarded as a classic and is a rare and expensive find.

Piff's What Ifs? 1- Ice Climbers Wii

Piff’s What-Ifs? 1- Ice Climbers Wii

This is a new feature we are trying out. It’s called “Piff’s What-Ifs”. In it, I, or any other crew member, can pitch their idea for a Wii game they would like to see. You can also send in your own “what-if?” by posting in this thread http://wiitv.freeforums.org/fan-what-if-s-t519.html#8006 or sending us an e-mail at hearmii@gmail.com Please tell us what you think of this kind of feature in the comments below.
