Persona 4 Arena is Atlus’ latest entry in the popular Shin Megami Tensei subseries. Surprisingly though, it is a fighting game, whereas all the others are RPGs. This is also the first Persona game to hit not just Sony's system but the Xbox 360 too. Developed in collaboration with Arc System Works (of Blazblue fame), the game serves as a direct sequel to PS2’s Persona 4 and takes place a few months after a group of high school students (P4’s main cast) solve a series of murders that threatens the sleepy town of Inaba. Arena pits these students against each other in the P-1 Grand Prix, but what at first seems to be a harmless event hosted by one of their friends turns out to be much more than a simple prank.
Due to Arc System’s pedigree of fine anime brawlers, Arena is excellent as a standalone fighter. Features like auto-combos and combo-breaking bursts make the game accessible for novices, but there is still plenty of depth for hardcore players. Stringing together the most effective combos by using a character and their Persona in tandem takes practice, and each character has their own distinct playing style and stats.

Arena also has a fully developed story (complete with voice acting) that does well in catching up series newcomers. However, fans will definitely get the most value out of the many nods to Persona 4, as well as the return of some of the cast of Persona 3. Fans will appreciate bonus content like game art, character portraits, and the choice of English or Japanese language tracks. Story Mode will also appeal to them more than to casual players, who may find the amount of text daunting. Luckily there are many more modes to hold their interest, like Arcade, Challenge, and Score Attack Mode on top of the obligatory Versus and Network play. On top of the pretty visuals, the game also features superb UI in both the menus and during battle, as well as a great soundtrack (including original and remixed versions of existing Persona songs, as well as all new ones) from series composer Shoji Meguro.

Overall, Persona 4 Arena provides fantastic fan service while not alienating newcomers, and it would be a great addition to any Persona or fighting fan’s collection.TheAssailanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17652024058358047846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-444601664927545132.post-3337393520826725232012-09-26T10:00:00.000-04:002012-09-26T10:00:05.805-04:00Top 5 Voice Actors in Gaming

Every game has its iconic features that set it apart and make it instantly recognizable to fans and non-fans alike. It can be a logo, a theme song, or even a character’s hat. One thing that really brings games alive, and just so happens to be the subject of this article, is a character’s voice. Whether it be with a deep, heroic drawl or an upbeat, innocent lilt, a character’s voice can draw players in and really make them feel. That epic one-liner might send a chill down your spine, or that heartfelt speech might bring a tear to your eye. Maybe a character’s voice will bring you back to the good old days; nothing can fill you with nostalgia quite so well as Mario’s declaration of “its-a me!”

So in honour of these great actors that make our games that much better, here’s a list (in no particular order) of Gaming’s Top 5 Voice Actors.

Michael Ironside

Michael Ironside is best known for portraying Third Echelon agent and star of the Splinter Cell series, Sam Fisher. His gruff and tough voice perfectly communicates that this guy is a real veteran; he’s been there, done that, and will take no prisoners. Unfortunately, despite voicing Fisher in every Splinter Cell for the past 10 years (so, all of them), Ironside is being replaced by lesser known actor Eric Johnson in the upcoming Blacklist.

Steve Downes

Steve Downes is the voice of none other than Halo’s Master Chief. Our favorite Spartan is mostly the silent hero type, but when he does speak it always sounds badass. The calm, gravelly tone is perfect for the Chief’s dry sense of humour and makes the player feel ready for anything. It seems Downes hasn’t quite finished the fight yet, as he will reprise his role in Halo 4 and (presumably) future sequels.

Keith David

Keith David, the man with two first names, has voiced a plethora of characters, from Mass Effect’s Admiral Anderson to Halo’s Arbiter. David has an unbelievably deep and rumbling voice, and can roar like it’s nobody’s business. He sounds like a warrior, his anger can leave you shaking, and his conviction can inspire you. Plus, he voiced Goliath in Gargoyles (anybody remember that show?) so that’s pretty cool.

Laura Bailey

Laura Bailey has been in an unbelievable amount of games and anime. Though her name may not be as well known as some of the others on this list, she is a top notch voice actress who has provided the voice for Catherine’s namesake (the one with a ‘C’, not a ‘K’), Persona 4’s Rise Kujikawa, and even Street Fighter’s Chun Li. Any big RPG fan is sure to have heard her voicing one of the main, side, or enemy characters. Unlike the rest of the list, which is mostly comprised of men that sound like they have permanent throat infections, Bailey often plays higher-pitched, innocent sounding characters in games.

Jennifer Hale

Jennifer Hale is another superb voice actress that is famous for voicing ‘FemShep’ in the Mass Effect series. Her powerful, commanding voice is that of an independent woman who won’t let anyone get in her way. She makes it clear that she plays with the big boys, and is no damsel in distress. She has also voiced Samus Aran in the Metroid Prime trilogy, as well as Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear Solid. Basically, don’t mess with her.TheAssailanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17652024058358047846noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-444601664927545132.post-25969481260260424982012-09-25T10:14:00.000-04:002012-09-25T10:14:19.152-04:00TheAssailant Reviews: Borderlands 2

I bought the first Borderlands back in January 2011 when I had the urge to play a Shooter-RPG that would take my mind off of things. I played Borderlands almost everyday with my best friend in split screen co-op for hours at a time, and for even longer on a separate save. To me, playing Borderlands by myself was always a lot more boring and felt more like a chore than the pinnacle of fun it was in co-op. Sadly, since that time my best friend and I are now attending separate Universities, so I had to go through Borderlands 2 alone. However (and luckily for me), Borderlands 2 is just as much fun alone as it is with another person or a group, which should speak volumes to how it has improved over its predecessor.

Much like in the first Borderlands, a vault reveals itself on the planet Pandora after the original four Vault Hunters opened the first and were greeted with a fist (or tentacle) full of disappointment. Since the opening of Pandora's "box," a new substance began appearing across Pandora that attracted the attention of the Hyperion Corporation, dispatching the Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap, which goes awry as you should know if you played Claptrap's New Robot Revolution DLC for the original game. You play as one of the four new Vault Hunters who travel to Pandora in search of the new vault. Upon arrival, Handsome Jack attempts to murder you via exploding train, fails, and that's when the game actually starts.

I'll be frank here, I love the story of Borderlands 2. It has such a nice balance of seriousness and off-the-wall humor that no other game that I've played before has achieved; not even the original Borderlands. The main antagonist is a condescending dickbag that attempts to take potshots at your self-esteem every chance he gets (telling you countless times to just go kill yourself). In fact, I would go so far as to draw a comparison between GLaDOS and Handsome Jack. He's just one of those likable villains that the original Borderlands didn't have (Commandant Steele was a bad villain). The other two lovable characters that were consistently funny or amusing were Claptrap and Tiny Tina (voiced by Ashley Burch of Hey Ash, Watcha Playing?).

The storytelling is also leaps and bounds ahead of the original. Whereas in the original game, most of the backstory to missions were told in long dialogues shown only in the mission details page, Borderlands 2 gives you a short, single-sentenced snippet of the context of the mission, and then the characters will tell you all about it either in person or over ECHO. Not having to read in order to understand the story is a definite plus here. For once I actually felt like I was a part of the Borderlands universe, something the original game couldn't do. It also helps that the writing is tremendously superior to the original game, including childish humor for us to giggle at, which is always nice to have.

Much like the original, Borderlands 2 has you doing quests for experience, loot, and money. Leveling up allows you to use better weapons and armor, find better loot, and finish mission objectives within a reasonable difficulty. This time around, Gearbox added some new gameplay elements. The original Borderlands gave you Weapon Proficiencies where the more EXP you gained while holding a certain type of weapon, the better you got at using that weapon. Though it made sense, leveling up your proficiency proved difficult later in the game when training to take on Crawmerax the Invincible (more on that later), especially if you were trying to level up Eridian proficiency because the weapons were fairly weak and only began showing up in the middle of the game.

As a replacement, they've added in the Badass Rank system, where instead of giving EXP, completing challenges gives you Badass Rank points which will earn you Badass Tokens and you can then redeem those tokens for stat increases that carry across all your characters (you have the option of turning off these bonus stats). Since challenges are kept on a per-character basis, you could theoretically use Badass Rank to increase your Gun Damage stat to +100%, but it would take some time as you're only given a choice one stat from five per token, of which there are a total of fourteen. At the moment of this writing, my Badass Rank is 6589 and my Gun Damage stat is at +6.4%. These stats are also only increased in fractions of a percent.

Leveling up also gives you upgrades to your Action Skill, which is similar to the Action Skill system in the original, but more refined; allowing you to do more with your skill and your character (like being able to use the skill while downed in Fight For Your Life mode). However, ammo regeneration is no longer a perk to the Soldier/Commando class, forcing you to constantly buy ammo or use an absorption shield to absorb enemy ammo. Additionally, there are no more shields that regenerate health over time, but there are class mods and skills that allow you to regenerate health over time.
The level cap is currently at 50 and the final boss is around the early-mid 30s. Completing the game unlocks True Vault Hunter Mode, which is analogous to the Second Playthrough in the original Borderlands. However, the enemies in TVHM are much tougher and far more varied than the first playthrough. Playing this mode, you will actually encounter new versions of enemies that don't appear the first time around, like Armored Maniacs (Psychos) and corrosive Bullymongs. I see this difficulty increase as a challenge to my badassitude, and I accept. It's a good thing enemies stay dead when you respawn from a death.

Additionally, they added a new Invincible creature for you (to attempt) to defeat. Much like Crawmerax in the General Knoxx DLC, this creature is at a level beyond the cap, which you cannot match. Allegedly, it was designed as a boss for four level 50 characters to tackle together. So if your friends are either dysfunctional or non-existent, I wish you the best of luck.

Verdict
I liked the first Borderlands, and this game really stands out as a testament of what a good sequel is. The 30+ hours I've spent playing Borderlands 2 were more enjoyable than the 100+ hours I spent on the original. Everything that bothered me in the original was fixed, and everything I liked was kept the same or made even better. I highly recommend getting Borderlands 2 and either playing it alone or with your friends, despite the distinct lack of the promised 96.5% more wub wub.
In fact, this is the very website where I first started doing that like five years ago. Since then, I’ve been smithin’ words over at places like 148 Apps, North by Northwestern and my own personal blog but today I’m making it official that I’m rejoining the Hear Mii family as the new managing editor.

The name Hear Mii has meant many things throughout the years. Back during the Wii.TV days it was the name of the podcast and after that fell apart it became the name of the whole site itself. Going forward though, I think we can make it mean more than that. We can make this a place where individual voices and their thoughts on the video games we all know and love can be heard. That’s not too corny right?

Anyway, I’m not the only new face you’ll be seeing soon. We’re already rebuilding our team to help Hear Mii kick ass and take names like never before. Also, while I’m a little too busy to write on a regular basis, expect more letters like these from time to time.

My body is ready, I hope yours is too.

-Jordan “Piffman2” Minor
P.S.

"Nintendo of America has announced a release date for Wii U in the United States, and it's November 18. It doesn't launch in Japan until December 8, but Nintendo launched the original Wii first outside of Japan, too.

There are two sets. The basic set includes a Wii U, Game Pad, AC adaptor, HDMI cable, sensor bar and 8GB of memory. The "deluxe" set also includes 32GB of memory, a Game Pad charging cable, Game Pad cradle, a copy of NintendoLand, and enrollment in a premium service on Nintendo Direct, where you earn points for each purchase and can redeem them later for other purchases. The exact details are unclear.

The big question? Price. It's $299 for the basic set, and $349 for the deluxe set.

As for big game announcements, Nintendo is publishing (funding?) Bayonetta 2 with Platinum Games, Monolith Soft is making a new game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is coming to the platform, and there's a new Monster Hunter. Well, "new." Monster Hunter Ultimate (Monster Hunter Tri G U in Japan) is based on the 3DS game, and the save data will be interchangeable between the two platforms. It's available at launch in Japan, and March everywhere else.

Project P-100, also from Platinum Games, was easily one of the most exciting Wii U games at E3, and that's been renamed The Wonderful 101. Spoiler: still looks awesome. Epic Mickey 2 will also be receiving a Wii U upgrade, and Activision made the clutch announcement of Skylanders Giants. Nintendo didn't discuss the NFC features baked into the Game Pad, though, so one might expect that will still have a separate device to scan the characters in.

Nintendo broke down the hilariously large 'launch window' for Wii U, as well: November 18 until the end of March. Besides New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand, the company wasn't confirming release dates, but since Pikmin 3 isn't coming out until next spring in Japan, I wouldn't expect it over here this year, either."

I am still not convinced on Wii U, but I do like the some of the new games that they announced. Bayonetta 2 looks promising, and The Wonderful 101still looks like fun. However, Nintendo TVii looks very ambitious, but also looks very buggy and frustrating to navigate. The price point is very nice, and will definitely fly off store shelves this Black Friday in the states.
Today at Nintendo's Wii U Press Conference, Reggie confirmed that one of Platinum Games' new games for the Wii U will be a sequel to the acclaimed Bayonetta, exclusively available on Wii U and published by Nintendo themselves. It looks like Bayonetta just didn't sell enough, forcing Platinum to partner with Nintendo on the publishing effort. Regardless, Bayonetta 2 will sure to be a welcome addition to any gamer's library, considering how well-made the original was.

The moment I saw that moon along with the Platinum Games logo, I immediately knew it had to be Bayonetta.

Note: This review will be split between the main game and the Dawnguard DLC. For the main game, click here.

After beating a majority of Skyrim, I shelved it because I had lost interest and didn't have much else to do. And so I patiently waited for the Dawnguard DLC, and bought it almost immediately and began to play it. Though it's still Skyrim, this DLC brings a lot of its own flavor, something I'm used to seeing in the Fallout DLCs (I never played the Oblivion DLCs, but I should get around to doing that soon). Unfortunately, it also leaves a lot to be desired.

Gameplay

Dawnguard is still very much Skyrim and nothing major has changed except for the expansion of the Vampires. Part of the reason I began to dislike Oblivion was because my character gained Vampirism due to my ignorance and no one warning me that Elder Scrolls vampires will literally die in the sun. Though the disadvantages of being a vampire still exist in Skyrim, I was lucky because I was a werewolf, and werewolves are immune to diseases.

Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy,
But I'm a vampire, so join me, maybe?

Additionally, it added perk trees for both Vampires and Werewolves, allowing the player's alternate form to gain attack bonuses and other bonuses. I transformed into a werewolf, and began extending my bloodlust to gain perks (devouring enemies is how you gain perks as a werewolf). I traveled from Riften and went across the map, all the way to Markarth (which is across the entire map, long-ways).

There are a few new weapons, such as the Crossbow which I didn't like using, and Auriel's Bow which, if you play the Dawnguard quest, you'll find is quite a badass weapon if you're using the right ammo. It also adds two new classes of dragons for you to fight and have your ass handed to you for thinking you were ready for them.
It seems Bethesda was too tempted to not reference a certain series of books featuring sparkling vampires in High School and their competition with werewolves (just as I was too tempted to not reference Carly Rae Jepsen). As you may have noticed, Skyrim has both werewolves and vampires, and playing Dawnguard as a werewolf gets you some condescending remarks about being "filthy," like after you rescue the Vampire Lord's daughter and bring her home safely. I was given the offer to renounce my werewolfness and become a vampire as my reward. "To hell with that" I said and booked it out of there.
Luckily, the Vampiress you rescued has daddy issues and comes to you for help in stopping her father (which made me regret marrying Aela before the DLC came out). Turns out she doesn't agree with her father's plans to create eternal darkness so vampires could roam around and do vampirey things as they please. But don't think you're out of the clear, later on she'll also tempt you into becoming a vampire (which you can get out of through compromise, luckily). You'll find a wonderfully huge new place to play around and kill things in and by the time you're done you'll be begging for more. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much more than that.

Verdict

Do I think Dawnguard is worth the $20 I spent on it? Most likely not. While there was a lot here, I feel as though I've gotten more from Fallout DLC, which I should remind everyone is only $10. However, what is here is still a great addition to an already great game. If you were to start a new save, all the new additions that Dawnguard brings could be put to much better use in the fight against Alduin or one of the other major side-quests in Skyrim. It's definitely great, but if you can wait for a potential price drop or sale on this DLC, I say you should. Perhaps it's because I had already beaten the game, but it feels as if there was more they should have added, but didn't.
I've played the ever-loving crap out of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. I absolutely love the whole first-person open-world RPG thing, but for whatever reason, playing Oblivion was never something I fancied too well. I borrowed it from a friend and eventually gave it back because I complained it wasn't "as good as Fallout." Luckily, Skyrim is a huge improvement over Oblivion.

Gameplay

Much like Oblivion, Skyrim has multiple character races, each with their own specialty stats (but you can still learn whatever you want, race doesn't affect that). Leveling up is achieved by doing things related to the skill; smithing, doing damage with bows, doing damage with magicka, gaining damage to heavy armor, etc. The main difference here is that Skyrim allows you to level up at any time without having to seek a bed to sleep in. Additionally, the actual level cap is 81, where in Oblivion the level cap was varied as it depended on how you leveled up (a glitch from a poorly thought-out game mechanic).

Don't read this out loud.

Also new to Skyrim is the use of dragon shouts to help in fighting a battle. As the player, you can go and find certain word walls with a word of power for you to learn, which is required for a predetermined shout (you can't create shouts, however). The popular shout "Fus Ro Dah" (known in the game as Unrelenting Force) is composed of the Dragon words for "force," "balance," and "push" that must first be found throughout the game before the full shout can be used.

This is a nice city you have here. It'd be a shame if
something happened to it...

Fighting dragons is also great. There is nothing more challenging or satisfying as having an epic battle with a damn dragon. When I first started the game, I had a few difficulties with dragons, but as the game progressed and I became better with a bow, dragons were much more easily conquered, while still maintaining a satisfying challenge. It also becomes easier when after playing through the main questline, as you learn a shout that forces dragons to land and stay grounded for about a minute (which you can then keep spamming to keep them grounded).

Except for the new running mechanic, the ability to fight dragons, and using dragon shouts, not much is new compared to Oblivion and the Fallout games. However, what is here is much more refined than in the previous games and comes together feeling very well put together. For example, instead of having a bounty across the entire game world like you would in Oblivion, Skyrim has individual bounties for each administrative hold of Skyrim.

Story

Taking place 200 years after the events of Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has you in the shoes of the fabled "Dovahkiin," a warrior born of dragon blood right at a time when the dragons have returned to Tamriel and their leader, Alduin, wishes to do some very bad things to it.

Pictured: Alduin, stuff exploding, shizz going down.

You survive execution thanks to Alduin's dragon attack, but unfortunately Alduin is the bad guy and you need to go stop him before some serious shizz happens in the land of Skyrim. To make things worse, you're caught in the middle of a civil war between the local Nords and their leader Ulfric Stormcloak, and the regency of the Empire of Cyrodiil, located to the south. You can of course, choose your priorities in how you will handle all of Skyrim's problems; you can for example take out Alduin immediately and then focus on the rest of Skyrim, or take your time with the main quest and explore as much as your heart pleases. It's all up to how you want to do things.

Additionally, a lot of time and effort went into creating the dragon language; dragons speak their own language to each other, and they have their own cuneform-like writing script. The language was well thought out and has quite the list of words and some grammatical differences, though still similar in construction to English. Hell, even the game's main theme is sung entirely in Dragon, and actually rhymes in both English and Dragon.

Here's the first verse of the main theme in both Dragon and English as an example of what I mean by "they both rhyme":

Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin, naal ok zin los vahriin,
Wah dein vokul mahfaeraak ahst vaal!
Ahrk fin norok paal graan fod nust hon zindro zaan,
Dovahkiin, fah hin kogaan mu draal!

Dragonborn, Dragonborn, by his honor is sworn,
To keep evil forever at bay!
And the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout,
Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray!

Verdict

Skyrim has been an immensely enjoyable experience throughout. I've already poured 150 hours into a single save (for comparison, my Pokemon saves are between 70-100 hours only, and that is over the course of years). There isn't a part I don't like about Skyrim, unless it's being torn to shreds by dragons early on in the game. It's currently only the second game I've been motivated enough to get all achievements, before the DLC came out and messed that up for me (but I'll have them all again soon). The story is good, the gameplay is great, and overall the game is fantastic. A lot of work went into this game, and glitches were very sparse, the only major one I came across involved a sidequest that asks you to steal an item from a house that becomes inaccessible after the Civil War questline. Overally, Skyrim has definitely become one of my new favorites.
Canadians don't like to play around. Amazon Canada is getting right to the point by releasing what appears to be official boxarts for both Assassin's Creed III and an Avengers Wii U game. We're not sure if the curved top is going to be the final design standard for every Wii U game, but it seems very legit.

Personally, I don't like it (it's too Gamecube-esque for my tastes), but for Assassin's Creed III that won't be a problem, I already have my box picked out and I'm currently waiting for the game.
In a surprising move, Crytek has dispelled any rumors that they are currently working on Crysis 3 for the Wii U. Previously, Crytek had stated that they received a Wii U SDK and were pleased with it. They had stated that their development team in Nottingham "are very happy with their tests on the dev kits and they're excited about it."

Speaking about the possibility of Crysis 3 on Wii U, Crytek's general manager Nick Button-Brown stated on his Twitter account:

"Just to answer the speculation, we are not currently working on a [Wii U] version of [Crysis 3]."

It is entirely possible that although they have the SDK for the Wii U, that the console was announced too late in the development cycle of Crysis 3 (as it would require them to work on the game for the console and spend more money testing it alongside the other 3 versions). It's also likely that a Wii U version releasing alongside the 360, PS3 and PC versions would have pushed Crysis 3 to a later date, and that the publisher (EA) wouldn't appreciate the delay.
