Wii: 2 Year Anniversary Special Editorial

Imagine that. Just two years ago, we (well, most) were standing outside our local GameStop et al just to be able to pick up the first batch of Wiis that were going to be released. Wow, two years sure seems to fly by when you're having fun, but it's not all fun and games.
It was to happen. When you put the product in the hands of consumers (some extremely dumb), some bad things are going to happen. People completely ignored the Wii strap and ended up flinging their Wii Remotes into the TV, cat, microwave, basically anything within a 100-foot radius (about 30 meters), and caused much destruction. Even then, the straps weren't providing much protection, easily broken by all, from jocks to hockey moms, Wii remotes were still flying. As it turns out, the strap provided from day one by Nintendo was 0.7 mm thick, and was easily broken by strong force. Nintendo issued a recall on the strap, and sent up to 4 replacement straps each for all customers, that would be better suited to rough handling (being 1 mm thick), but Nintendo still had the civil suit filed against them for the defective wrist straps.

*Sniff sniff* Eww, do you smell that? Oh God it absolutely reeks. What could it possibly be? Oh wait, it's just shovelware, otherwise known as complete loads of shit. Yes, shovelware has been around for years, but it is becoming more prominent thanks to developers wanting to make a quick buck and slapping together a game that takes 20 minutes to beat, and probably only took 2 hours to port over from the PS2. Yes, NinjaBread Man is a PS2 port, another problem 3rd party developers have on the Wii. It's almost as if creating a decent game is nearly impossible on the Wii, either that or these developers seriously need to get off their asses and at least produce half-decent games. Games like these are actually giving the Wii a bad name and a bad reputation. Ok guys, seriously we already have Wii Sports and Wii Fit, we don't need Deca Sports, or all these other sports games (Except for EA Sports titles), but we don't even need EA's answer to Wii Fit, we've bought Wii Fit already, we're not going to waste MORE money on peripherals, but considering the Guitar Hero-Rock Band drama, I guess we are just going to have to pick and choose. But seriously, be original guys.

The Wii experience for the core gamer has been pretty flawless, despite shovelware attempts to soil the good name of Wii and Nintendo creating Wii Music. Already, Nintendo has released it's stash of great games (obviously milking, but meh), such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii. Even more great games have been released by 3rd party developers, such as No More Heroes, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Guitar Hero III (and World Tour) and for the sake of pissing everyone off, which I do quite often, Red Steel. Despite having shaky pointing, Red Steel was one of the best games available at launch, only being overshadowed by Twilight Princess and Need For Speed: Carbon (a pretty decent game, but not an 8 by all means). The awesome train doesn't stop there, next year we will be seeing the release of The Conduit and MadWorld, the latter causing tons of controversy by British people who don't believe in free speech in video game form. Fuck them anyway, I will go and buy MadWorld, even if I have to give my body up to Pedobear. o_O Uhh, nevermind, I'd rather give up my freedom to Jessica Alba or Samus Aran. ;)

These past two years have been really good for the Wii, but they could be better. Who wants to boycott certain companies that are soiling the Wii brand? (Data Design Interactive, we're looking at you) Lets hope this year brings us even better Wii, WiiWare and Virtual Console games. Only time will tell.

Happy Birthday Wii!
